Last Saturday, March 26, Rosehill Guineas Day 2011 came to a close with the $125,000 Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) and in an upset result the Kris Lees-trained Zingaling claimed a narrow victory.
Four-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare Zingaling was first-up for the season and went out as an $11 shot in the 2011 Birthday Card Stakes with all the money on hot favourite, Gai Waterhouse’s Triscay Stakes winner Kiss From A Rose.
In a fierce fight down the home straight, frontrunners including Lady’s Angel, Oakfield Beauty and Flying Success all had their chance while Kiss From A Rose ($3.20F) was never a threat after missing the start and having to settle mid-field.
On the line it was Zingaling and jockey Jim Cassidy who got home first, beating home the Joseph Pride-trained Lady’s Angel ($7) by just a short-neck while stablemate to the failed favourite, Gai Waterhouse’s Flying Success ($16) was a brave third the same distance back again.
Kiss From A Rose eventually finished seventh nearly two lengths away from the Birthday Card Stakes winner.
Zingaling has now won three of their 12 career starts for $247,300 in prize money.
The next feature meeting of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival is the highly anticipated Golden Slipper running at Rosehill this Saturday April 2.
