Next The Universe Faces 2012 Birthday Card Stakes Test

March 30th, 2012

Trainer Kris Lees will attempt to gain all important Black Type for Next The Universe in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes at Rosehill Racecourse tomorrow March 31, 2012.

Next The Universe finished second in her last start at Canterbury and will be stepping up to group level for the first time in her career.

The Mossman mare has won two of her 20 arce starts and has earned close to $150,000 in prize money.

Next The Universe has drawn barrier two for the 2012 Birthday Card Stakes tomorrow and will be ridden by jockey Corey Brown.

Lees understands how important the 2012 Next The Universe is for Next The Universe’s broodmare career.

“For a brood mare black type is incredibly important,’’ Lees said.

‘‘Next The Universe is a city Saturday winner, so the only way her value can be enhanced now is getting black type. That is what I am chasing with her now.”

The trainer is hopeful the mare can step up to the challenge.

‘‘This is her first try in a black-type race, so it is a hard task but it is the right time to try as she is going well,” she said.

‘‘She does have a good turn of foot and if she can sit off a fast pace I am sure she can finish off her race well and hopefully run into the placings, which would do.

‘‘Of course, a bit of rain would not hurt her chances.’’
