March 28th, 2014

While sharing the same Rosehill Gardens race card with three Group 1 events this weekend, the 2014 Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) is shaping as one of the most well-fought races of the day, offering punters several key runners to back in betting markets.

Having returned to the track in scintillating form this preparation, talented mare Lilliburlero is currently featured as outright favourite for 2014 Birthday Card Stakes success on Saturday at a quote of $4, ahead of Avoid Lightning and Single Style; sharing the second line of betting at $5 odds.

Will Lilliburlero justify her favouritism amongst punters this weekend, or will one of her talented rivals cause an upset?

Lilliburlero ($4)

Leaving a less-than-convincing 2013 racing calendar to the pages of history, Lilliburlero has found arguably career-best form in 2014, strolling home to claim the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) first-up before again impressing with a strong second behind in-form mare A Time For Julia in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m) on March 15th. Having drawn the ideal inside barrier for the Birthday Card Stakes, the talented Redoute’s Choice mare will again be partnered by in-form jockey Nash Rawiller.

Recoinage ($8)

Experiencing something of a great run of form, Recoinage offers punters great value for success in the 2014 Birthday Card Stakes at her current $8 odds. Strolling home to claim the Gifts.com.au Maiden (1300m) on February 8th, the Flying Spur mare finished second to Lilliburlero in the Triscay Stakes before claiming third in the Roy Higgins Tribute last time out. Having drawn barrier 2 for the Birthday Card Stakes, Recoinage is likely to receive the run of the race this weekend, allowing Lilliburlero to dictate the pace until the final straight.

Plucky Belle ($9)

Plucky Belle was disappointing when 12th in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) to close her 2013 spring preparation, however can chalk the short preparation up as a success, having finished second in the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) and claiming the Group 3 Lavazza Short Black (1400m) on Melbourne Cup day prior. Yet to appear on track in 2014, trainer Peter Moody is confident of first-up success for the Mossman mare in the Birthday Card Stakes, particularly after drawing the ideal barrier 4.
