Trainer David Brideoake has been thrilled with the form displayed by Griante through recent weeks and is confident the mare will be very tough to beat in the 2016 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens, should she not gain a start in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1200m).
Griante has been a strong and consistent performer for Brideoake through her entire racing career so-far; posting a commendable six wins and eight minors through only twenty-six competitive appearances to date.
Confirmed as the second emergency for The Galaxy on Saturday, Brideoake is confident that should she not gain a place in the capacity field for the headline sprint the Good Journey mare will be a serious chance of success in the 2016 Birthday Card Stakes, having completed a strong piece of work at Moonee Valley earlier this week.
“She’s an emergency and if that’s the case, the Birthday Card will be where she goes,” Brideoake told Racing Ahead.
“She’s come through that piece of work really well and we’re ready to shift tonight and I’m confident wherever she goes, she’ll run really well.
“When you’re a light-weight chance in these big handicaps, and it’s a terribly strong Galaxy, you just have to take it.
“She has significantly more weight (in the Birthday Card Stakes) but I think she’ll be highly competitive.”
Brideoake confirmed a trip to Adelaide to contest the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) in late April will likely figure as the major target for Griante after Saturday.
“She’ll go to Adelaide and the Group 1 mares’ race will be the ultimate goal,” Brideoake said.
“She’ll probably have this run in Sydney, maybe another one in Sydney and then to Adelaide.”
Griante was rated little chance of success in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this time and was sent off a $31 outsider, and while clearly performing well, experienced absolutely no luck in transit and was blocked for a run in the straight before finishing 12th.
